The broadband initiative of the Federal Republic of Germany provides financial support for the expansion of broadband technology. Internet service providers often face significant challenges in ensuring timely broadband supply due to missing ("white spots") or outdated cable infrastructure. Microwave technology can often close these supply gaps quickly and economically. Against the backdrop of meeting completion deadlines to avoid the repayment of subsidies, or simply to provide services to customers quickly, microwave technology is more than just a bridge technology.
Microwave technology is much more than just an alternative to wired connections.
Professional carrier-class microwave systems enable a direct connection between two locations that is completely independent of the public fiber-optic network. This allows you to create solutions where wired options reach their technological, temporal, and financial limits.
Microwave technology is suitable for all companies that are not yet connected to the internet via broadband through leased lines, fiber-optic networks, or high-performance DSL connections. But even for companies with existing fiber-optic connections, microwave technology enables true media-neutral redundancy and thus creates optimal redundant broadband supply.
With our carrier-class microwave systems, you can achieve transmission rates of up to 20 Gbit/s full-duplex with availability rates of >=99.995%. In addition, microwave transmissions achieve very low latency times of a few microseconds.
As a point-to-point connection, microwave links provide you with a dedicated connection—a link exclusively for your company, just like a fixed leased line. This reveals one of the most important advantages of microwave technology: transmission security and protection against eavesdropping. The risks of public IP networks, which are shared with other participants, are eliminated. Take advantage of the higher overall availability compared to fiber-optic lines! While weather conditions (rain) do have an effect on microwave transmissions, all modern microwave systems are equipped with mechanisms (adaptive modulation) that counteract this influence. Significantly less complicated maintenance and troubleshooting also create much higher overall availability. The often-cited excavator that damages cables during civil engineering work is just one source of danger for frequent, long-term downtime in cable connections.
Microwave links are implemented quickly and cost-effectively. Realization is possible within a few weeks, and investment costs are dramatically lower compared to a wired solution. Finally, you benefit from very low operating costs. Compart offers a portfolio of high-quality, innovative, and economical manufacturing partners for almost all microwave areas.
Take advantage of modern microwave technology yourself and save the costs of expensive, underground leased lines. We would be happy to advise you!
How microwave transmission works
Microwave technology is a wireless high-speed connection in which bundled radio beams transmit large amounts of data precisely between two antennas via a direct line of sight—fast, powerful, and without cables.
Point-to-Point (PTP)
Microwave transmission is a state-of-the-art, wireless method of data transfer using electromagnetic waves.
Special microwave antennas bundle the waves and ensure a so-called "directed" transmission, where data is sent specifically in a narrow beam between two locations. This bundling is the reason why microwave technology can bridge very large distances of up to 50 km.
The prerequisite for implementing microwave links is a clear line of sight between both locations. A line of sight exists when at least the first Fresnel zone is free of obstacles, allowing radio waves to propagate without interruption.
In addition, license-free frequencies are available in the 5 GHz and 60 GHz frequency ranges; therefore, no frequency allocation by the Federal Network Agency is necessary.
Currently, speeds of up to 20 Gbit/s full-duplex are possible.
Due to the physics of radio wave propagation, the achievable link distance decreases as the frequency increases. This is compensated for by higher transmission power and/or more powerful transmission antennas.
Availability
The availability of a microwave link is expressed as a percentage and refers to the portion of time during which a signal can be transmitted. An availability of 99.99% therefore means an average downtime of approximately 1 hour per year. By using high-quality hardware and diligent, professional planning, we at Compart IT-Solutions achieve availability rates of 99.995%, which means an average downtime of just a few minutes per year.
The perfect data highway
Renting or operating data networks is generally cost-intensive. Wired supply is unavailable in some regions or locations, or it suffers from enormous bandwidth issues. Additionally, underground redundant connections often end up in the same infrastructure after just a few meters, failing to provide true high availability. For all the applications mentioned above, microwave technology is more than just an alternative!
Compart uses carrier-class equipment from the global market leader, NEC, in this area. The enormous leaps in innovation in microwave technology are carrier-driven, as more than 90% of microwave resources are installed in this highly expansive mobile market. Increasingly, more companies and organizations are discovering microwave technology for operating their wide-area networks because the price-performance ratio is outstanding.
Compart has independently or with partners built several thousand microwave networks in Germany for industry, service companies, public authorities, and ISPs. Numerous these networks are operated as primary networks. If microwave technology can be used technically—either directly or via relay points due to the terrain topography—enormous advantages are achieved:
Transmission rates of up to 20 Gbit/s full duplex are achievable for point-to-point connections.
Significant cost savings compared to leased, underground dedicated lines. Projects typically achieve payback periods of 10 to 18 months.
Microwave technology can naturally transmit data, voice, and video
It is flexibly expandable, as the equipment features a modular design and scalable bandwidth.
Microwave transmission offers extremely high availability of > 99.995%
It offers true redundancy should the microwave network not be the primary network.
QoS and VLAN support across the entire bandwidth
Very short project lead times of a few days/weeks
Microwave transmission is secure against interception!
Broadband access for every customer
The use of wireless transmission media offers service providers a unique, complementary solution to fiber-optic infrastructure!
Numerous telecommunications providers (especially mobile network operators) have been successfully relying on carrier-class microwave systems for years. In particular, data backhaul to the constantly growing number of mobile cell towers is very often handled via professional microwave links. The arguments are clear:
Microwave links can be implemented very quickly – often before fiber-optic connections are completed. Microwave technology creates the necessary redundancy and thus increases overall availability. Low investment – low operating costs.
In addition, professional microwave technology offers service providers significant added value:
Connecting "white spots" (underserved areas) that cannot be economically reached with a wired solution. Connecting "white spots" before a fiber-optic connection is completed. Securing customer relationships before fiber-optic expansion is finished. Creating media-neutral redundant connections. If the wired line fails, microwave technology secures broadband supply.
The broadband initiative of the Federal Republic of Germany also provides financial support for the expansion of broadband technology. Internet service providers often face significant challenges in ensuring timely broadband supply due to missing or outdated cable infrastructure. Microwave technology can often close these supply gaps quickly and economically.
Against the backdrop of meeting completion deadlines to avoid the repayment of subsidies, or simply to provide services to customers quickly, microwave technology is more than just a bridge technology.
Good reasons for microwave radio
Almost all relevant decision-making parameters speak in favor of modern microwave technology. We have summarized them for you here:
High availability: The availability of a microwave link is expressed as a percentage and refers to the proportion of time during which a signal can be transmitted. An availability of 99.99 percent therefore means an average downtime of approximately 1 hour per year. By using high-quality hardware and diligent, professional planning, we at Compart IT-Solutions achieve availability rates of 99.995 percent. This means an average downtime of just a few minutes per year.
Rapidly deployable technology: The speed of implementation depends on the regulatory authority, at least in regulated areas. We can set the project timeline from concept to commissioning at between three and eight weeks. This makes the flexibility of microwave radio unbeatable compared to almost all other available technologies!
Overcoming very long distances (over 50 km): Microwave links easily cover 50 km as the crow flies. This allows you to cover enormous distances with little effort—for example, by daisy-chaining microwave links—and achieve high bandwidth and quality for data, voice, and video services.
Very low maintenance costs – high durability: The old saying among microwave radio technicians holds truer than ever: if a microwave link is running, it’s running! Because of the low power load, the equipment is not under significant electronic stress. End-to-end monitoring helps identify any potential weak points. The MTBF for the manufacturer products we use is generally over 60 years. Five-year warranties are available from all manufacturers.
Redundancy:With microwave technology, you can implement a simple backup connection for your wired data center connection. A fully redundant connection to the public IP network ensures continued service if your fiber-optic connection fails. Don't have a second location to connect your building? No problem—Compart works with a partner network to provide numerous platforms for connecting your properties!
Temporary solution:Need broadband access for an event? Compart provides temporary solutions, from the necessary microwave technology to temporary mast construction to establish a line of sight.
Data security – Protection against eavesdropping:Microwave systems are secure against eavesdropping! First, we would like to point to the technical facts. Please read the corresponding data sheet from our manufacturing partner, NEC. TheThe hundreds of microwave radio projects Compart has implemented in hospital environments, financial services, and banks are practical proof of data security. For those who need even more, additional security redundancy can be provided through encryption technology between the input and output units.
High transmission rates (100 Mbit/s - 20 Gbit/s):It is not without reason that these are even used for primary networks in hospital environments. Here, patient data and high-quality images, such as X-rays, are transmitted from the data center to every connected hospital bed. HD television signals and all UC applications benefit from these high-performance bandwidths.
True path-diverse redundancy (backup):When it comes to high availability—whether as a primary or secondary network—microwave radio provides truly independent, path-diverse redundancy. With a UPS concept, construction equipment cannot harm these "air-based" lines.
High cost-efficiency and significant savings potential:Microwave radio links are almost always significantly more economical compared to leased dedicated lines. Customers achieve payback periods of 12 to 18 months!
Cost savings:A cost-effective investment as an alternative to leased fiber-optic lines. Microwave radio is not only quick to implement but also offers an outstanding price-performance ratio. As a CAPEX option, microwave radio offers payback periods of 10 to 18 months; alternatively, Compart also offers microwave solutions as a managed service with monthly fees.
Interim solution:Civil engineering and cable laying work can be time-consuming! Bridge the wait until your fiber-optic connection is completed with a microwave radio solution, ideally implemented within just a few days. Once the wired solution is ready, it serves as an ideal redundancy.
