WAN - Wide Area Network

holistic, economical, and from experienced hands

Your partner and specialist for high-performance WAN infrastructures

A Wide Area Network (WAN) is a network that connects various local area networks (LANs) across large geographical distances. Unlike LANs, which operate in limited spatial areas such as office buildings or campus environments, a WAN often spans vast geographical areas, including cities, countries, or even continents.

WANs enable communication and data exchange between remote locations and provide extensive connectivity. WANs play a crucial role in companies and organizations, as they offer the ability to network distributed locations, exchange data, enable remote access, and provide business-critical applications.

They are also essential for global connectivity and worldwide access to the Internet.

Microwave radio is a central building block of modern WAN solutions – high-performance, fail-safe, and lightning-fast to install.

Microwave radio plays a very important, often underestimated role in the WAN (Wide Area Network) sector – especially where high availability, fast connectivity, or geographical challenges are involved.

Today, microwave connections with data rates of 20 Gbit/s over distances of up to 30 km are a reality. These connections operate very stably, are fail-safe and tap-proof, and also offer very low latency.

Particularly significant for corporate WANs

Ideal complement to fiber optics in the WAN

Microwave radio is often used as a backup or redundancy medium to minimize WAN outages.

Benefits:
- Physically separate path → no single point of failure
- Rapid restoration, even during fiber optic disruptions
- Cost-efficient compared to redundant fiber optics

In professional WAN design, microwave radio is therefore a strategically important element. Where conventional wired networks reach their spatial and technological limits, modern microwave technology provides the ideal conditions for a direct, wireless connection between two or more locations.

Our microwave systems allow for data rates between 10 Mbit/s and 20 Gbit/s across various frequency bands. State-of-the-art radio technology enables excellent transmission quality with very short implementation times. Transmission takes place via directional antennas that have high directivity and strongly focus the data being transmitted. A prerequisite for implementing microwave links is a clear line-of-sight between the two locations. Furthermore, the first Fresnel zone must be free of obstacles to allow the radio waves to propagate freely. It is also possible to bypass individual obstacles. Corresponding preliminary investigations, such as feasibility studies and radio field planning, ensure the long-term, low-maintenance, and reliable operation of a microwave link.

In the licensed spectrum, frequencies are permanently assigned to individual owners by the Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur), and interference from other participants is excluded. In contrast, multiple participants share the frequency range in the license-free spectrum. This is primarily used for short distances, e.g., for connecting a new building up to 4 km away.

Modern microwave technology saves you the costs of expensive, buried leased lines. We offer a portfolio of high-quality, innovative, and economical manufacturer partners for all microwave ranges and applications.
