Microwave link planning

Microwave link
planning

Professional carrier-class microwave systems enable a direct connection between two locations, making them completely independent of the public fiber-optic network. This allows you to create solutions where wired options reach their technological, temporal, and financial limits. All major providers rely on microwave technology, among other things, to transport rapidly increasing data demands to 5G mast locations quickly, with high availability, and cost-effectively.

Microwave technology is much more than just an alternative to wired lines; furthermore, frequencies are firmly assigned to operators by the Federal Network Agency, which eliminates interference. For specific applications (e.g., ad-hoc applications), license-free systems are also available.

Feasibility study

Every successful project begins with a well-executed feasibility study. The principle here is: the more professional the feasibility study, the better the actual result.

‍

The feasibility study covers the following three areas:

  • Map survey
  • Line-of-sight (LoS) test – radio link survey (path survey)
  • Station planning (site survey)

‍

We first verify feasibility using an application tool developed for the map survey based on digital geo-maps. The map survey provides an initial, detailed assessment of the performance and business case for the planned project.

Line-of-sight test (LoS, path survey)

Following this initial review, the results from the map survey are cross-referenced with actual site conditions during a path survey. The planned antenna locations are physically inspected on-site to verify an unobstructed line of sight. Our staff are, of course, fully trained for working at heights. For our line-of-sight tests, we use appropriately sized aerial work platforms and/or drones equipped with high-resolution cameras.

Site Survey

The site survey, also known as station planning, is a technical inspection where all aspects relevant to implementation are recorded and coordinated with other trades. This involves capturing all necessary details for coordination with other on-site contractors, including determining the location of all equipment (indoor/outdoor), identifying necessary antenna mounts, equipment cabinets, etc., and defining the routing for data and power cables. Once the site survey is complete, all the facts are on the table, allowing for the derivation and determination of almost all implementation costs.

Creating a solution design

BNetzA Frequency Management

When using microwave systems in the licensed frequency spectrum, an allocation by the Federal Network Agency (BNetzA) is required. Compart prepares the appropriate frequency application based on the results of a radio link calculation. We calculate frequencies, antenna sizes, transmission power, and availability, taking into account regulatory requirements, and provide a completely pre-filled frequency application for further processing. And that’s not all: we are happy to act as the technical contact for the BNetzA on behalf of the future operator until the final allocation is granted.

Tender Management

We are happy to support you in all areas of your tender for IT/IoT infrastructures.

Defining technical requirements and evaluable criteria can be complex, especially in IT infrastructure projects, but it is always critical to the project's success.

We support you through the tender process in 5 steps.
